If you suspect that you’ve been the target of any IRS tax phone scams, don’t give out your personal info and report the scam to the proper authorities.

At no point ever will a real IRS agent ask you to supply your debt card or credit numbers over the phone to make a payment on back taxes. This is, however, one common way that IRS tax phone scams will try to steal from you.

Therefore, if you get a call about some alleged tax issue and the person on the other end of the line is asking for your debit or credit card numbers, be very suspicious, do not give out these numbers.

How to Respond When You’re the Subject of IRS Tax Phone Scams

If you believe that you have been the target of any type of IRS tax phone scams, here’s what you can and should do:

  • Hang up the phone and call the IRS back (at 800-829-1040) to verify whatever information the alleged IRS agent who called you may have told you.
  • Report the IRS tax phone scam to the Treasure Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA).
